20 Top Party Colleges Can You Still Get a Good Education
20 Top Party Colleges Can You Still Get a Good Education SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips In popular culture, college life is often portrayed as a nonstop party full of fun, bacchanalian times. While these portrayals are a bit exaggerated, some colleges have garnered reputations as being particularly festive. This raises the following questions:should you go to a party school? And can you get a good education at a party school? In this article, I'll define what a party school is, provideparty school rankings, and explain how you can still get a quality education from a college known for its epic parties. What Is a Party School? A party school has a very active on-campus party scene. In other words, there are frequent and numerous parties, which are usuallywell attended and act as popular social events for students. Universitiesthat are described as party schools generally have high rates of student drinking and drug use as well as a large number of fraternities and sororities. What Are the Top Party Colleges? Our list below is based onThe Princeton Review's listof the top 20 party schools in the US. Their list was created using students' answers to survey questions. According to The Princeton Review, the biggestparty schoolsare those at which students indicated a combination of low daily personal study hours (outside of class), high usages of alcohol and drugs on-campus, and high popularity of fraternities and sororities. Most top party schools are large public universities. Because large schools have more students, they often have a more vibrant social scene and more fraternities and sororities. Below, I'vecreated a table with the top 20 party schools, their undergraduate enrollments, and the average range of standardized test scores of admitted applicants. All private colleges arein bold. marsmettnn tallahaassee/Flickr Rank School Location Undergraduate Enrollment Middle 50% SAT Middle 50% ACT 1 University of Delaware Newark, DE 18,144 50-1330 25-29 2 West Virginia University Morgantown, WV 22,504 1010-1200 21-27 3 Tulane University New Orleans, LA 6,773 1350-1490 30-33 4 Syracuse University Syracuse, NY 15,252 60-1350 25-30 5 Bucknell University Lewisburg, PA 3,6 1250-1420 28-31 6 Lehigh University Bethlehem, PA 5,075 1270-1430 29-32 7 University of California- Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, CA 22,186 1240-1470 26-32 8 University of Wisconsin- Madison Madison, WI 32,196 1280-1450 27-31 9 Colgate University Hamilton, NY 2,873 1310-1500 31-33 10 University of Rhode Island Kingston, RI 14,470 1090-1260 23-27 The University of Alabama- Tuscaloosa Tuscaloosa, AL 33,028 1060-1280 23-31 12 University of Vermont Burlington, VT ,339 80-1350 25-30 13 Providence College Providence, RI 4,306 60-1330 26-30 14 Wake Forest University Winston Salem, NC 5,102 1260-1440 28-32 15 Union College (NY) Schenectady, NY 2,267 1270-1430 29-32 16 University of Maine Onoro, ME 9,279 1050-1250 22-27 17 University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign Champaign, IL 33,955 1280-1480 26-32 18 University of Florida Gainesville, FL 35,246 1240-1410 28-32 19 Florida State University Tallahassee, FL 33,093 90-1330 26-30 20 Sonoma State University Rohnert Park, CA 8,551 980-70 19-24 Can You Get a Good Education at a Party School? You can definitely get a good education at a party school. Some of the top party collegesare also some of the best schoolsin the US. For example, the University of Wisconsin- Madison, the #8 ranked party school, was ranked the #15public school in the US by US News. Meanwhile, UCSB, the #7 ranked party school, is ranked both the #5 public school and the #30 national university by US News. Itââ¬â¢s part of the University of California system, which includes some of the top research universities in the world. Finally, the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign (the #17 party school) hasthe bestgraduate program in library and information science in the nation. It's also important to note that not all students who attend top partycolleges participate in the party culture.Even at party schools, there are many students who donââ¬â¢t party. Students who donââ¬â¢t party often find a community of like-minded students in their dorms or in various on-campus organizations.Especially at large public universities, there are so many students that you're bound to find plenty of people who arenââ¬â¢t party animals. How Do You Get a Good Education at a Party School? At almost every college, there are parties and temptation that can get in the way of your studies. At party schools, there's even more temptation because there are more parties and more students who like to party. Personally, Idonââ¬â¢t think thereââ¬â¢s anything wrong with doing some partying in college, but you have to take care that you're not letting your partying get in the way of your academic success. As long as you do the following, youââ¬â¢ll be able to enjoy the occasional party and get an exceptional education. #1: Manage Your Time Regardless of whether you party or not, time management is essential when youââ¬â¢re in college. For many students, college is the first time they donââ¬â¢t have their parents regularly telling them what to do and when to do it. If you've got a test Friday morning, you need to have the discipline to not stay out late partying on Thursday instead of preparing for your test and getting a good night's sleep. If you've got a big paper due Monday, maybe you shouldnââ¬â¢t spend all weekend partying and start your paper Sunday evening. Even though some students can get away with this behavior, I wouldnââ¬â¢t advise it. To manage your time more effectively, I recommend establishing a routine each semester that will enable your academic success. Many of my Stanford peers would dedicate themselves to studying Monday-Thursday nights, relax and have fun Friday nights and Saturdays, and spend most of the day on Sundays on their academics. The amount of time you need to spend studying and doing classwork willvarydepending on your class schedule and academic strengths, but it's imperative you develop habits that will allow you to be successful. If you're working part-time or participating in athletics or other extracurricular activities, you'll have less available study time, so you'll have to manage your time exceptionally well. At Stanford, I was on the gymnastics team and had an on-campus job. Because my free time was limited, I knew that I had to take advantage of the hours I had available to focus on my academics. I did a decent job of managing my time, so I was ultimately able to have ample time for fun, too. #2: Remember Your Priorities Reminding yourself why you're in college can help prevent you from letting parties take precedence. You probably worked hard in high school and chose to attend college to get a quality education and useful opportunities. What's more, college is a costly investment. If you neglect your studies to party, youââ¬â¢re not getting the most out of your educational opportunities. For 2018-19, the total cost of attendance for one year at Tulane- the #3 party school- is more than $72,000. Hopefully, you wouldnââ¬â¢t want to pay that much money just so you can play beer pong with your friends! #3: Choose Your Classes Wisely When youââ¬â¢re choosing your class schedule, try to pick the classes that interest you and will help you graduate with your desired major. Too many students try to avoid Friday classes or early morning classes so that school wonââ¬â¢t interfere with their partying.Because of your other responsibilities and time commitments, you might not be able to take every class that interests you, but, ideally, you won't allow your intended partying schedule to influence the classes you take. Admittedly, I didnââ¬â¢t like early morning classes and preferred not to take them because Iââ¬â¢m not a morning person. However, I still ended up taking all the classes I needed and wanted to take. #4: Maintain Balance In college, youââ¬â¢re likely going to have to juggle a number of responsibilities, in addition to the parties you might be attending. Many college students go to class, work, and participate in extracurricular activities. They canââ¬â¢t party so much that it takes away from their other responsibilities, but theyââ¬â¢re able to find the time to be able to work hard and play hard. On the other hand, there are many students who spend so much time in the library that they forget to have fun and interact socially with their peers. I definitely encountered some of these students during my time at Stanford.I recommend that you make sure to have fun while youââ¬â¢re in college and enjoy yourself. Iââ¬â¢m not advocating breaking any laws, but some of my greatest memories are from my social activities with my friends while I was in college. Parties can help form and strengthen friendships, and they can give you some quality stories youââ¬â¢ll cherish when youââ¬â¢re older and all your friends are too busy to party. dennis crowley/Flickr Conclusion: Should You Go to a Party School? Even though youââ¬â¢re not in college to party, parties can be a large part of the college experience, regardless of the school you attend. While party schools have more parties more often, you can still get a quality education from a party school. One of my friends who went to the University of Illinois excelled during his undergraduate years and ended up getting a PhD in Engineering from UC Berkeley. On the other hand, another friend who went there spent too much time partying and lost his athletic scholarship due to drug use. Similarly, even at a college that's not considered a party school, you can party too hard and suffer academic, legal, or health consequences due to irresponsible partying. In large part, the quality of your education and your future success is dependent on the choices you make while youââ¬â¢re in school. If you make wise choices and prioritize your time, you can get an exceptional education- and have fun doing so! What's Next? The impacts of events Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
The impacts of events - Assignment Example Touristsââ¬â¢ focus then started to shift with the advancements in the event industry. As event planners came into the picture they realized that the tourism industry needed social events which lead to the event tourism industry (Lim & Lee, 2006). People usually travel to destinations for leisure and relaxation purposes but there are also people who travel to destinations for the purpose of business meetings, conferences, workshops and other similar social events. This movement of people has given rise to the event tourism industry (WTO, 1995). Events and tourism now go hand in hand, and so one without another seems incomplete. The perfect way to describe tourism would be to say that it takes a systematic planning process along with development and marketing of special events and festivals as tourist attractions (Kreag, 2001). These events are usually organized after looking at the behavior of tourists and the things which attract them towards a destination. Moreover, tourism mana gement aims at event tourism at complete utilization of the capabilities of events so as to attain overall tourism development. Event tourism also includes the research on peopleââ¬â¢s travelling motives which can be characterized as cultural, prestigious, physical, social and interpersonal motives and are pleased by diverse and unusual events. The Worlds Expo 2010, organized in Shanghai, China, was a similar event which was organized to seek attention of the world and to increase tourism prospects in China. It was a 184 days event which was eyed by the whole World. There are many credits given to the World Expo (2010) and so it was able to positively engage the world to China. China as a country has a history of hosting such events, but the Expo 2010 proved to be the best one indeed and was referred to as an event having its class apart. The standards set by the World Expo 2010 are very difficult to break by any other World Event such as this one. Socio - Cultural impact of the World Expo 2010 A country which has a good image in terms of social events just is more likely to make itself the spot for tourist attraction. The expected impacts of the Worlds Expo 2010 were positively seen on the host country, as through holding social events like these, a host country or the destination is able to make its own standing and create its brand image (Emma H. Wood, 2005). Also, since the country becomes famous for its culture and infrastructure, its resorts also become famous and many companies start holding their annual meetings and other conferences in that country, magnetizing more and more people towards it (Allen, 2009). Similarly, China had many benefits because of the World Expo, as the event was remarkably successful and attracted many countries towards it and the more a country is able to attract tourists, the more it is able to raise its finances through tourism (Solberg & Preuss, 2007). China has now become one of the best host countries, because of the im pression it created in front of the whole world, without the itinerary of such events, tourism is held incomplete (Henderson, 2006). Such events are not only created for revenue generation or for economic benefits but are also created to highlight the social culture of the country. These socio-cultural impacts go a long way to

Native Americans (Subordinate Group) Essay Example for Free
Native Americans (Subordinate Group) Essay One often wonders where the Native North Americans originated from. Some theories have been discussed about the peopling of the Americas. Early theories involving lost tribes and continents were based purely on speculation instead of actual scientific facts. Discoveries made during many archeological expeditions have helped shape the always changing interpretations by adding more questions and more theories. There have been genetic and linguistic studies which raised more understanding and brought new questions. It is theorized that during the latter part of the Cenozoic era, also known as the age of mammals that the Wisconsin glaciation caused enough of the planetââ¬â¢s water supply to turn into ice. This lowered the oceans and exposed now submerged land. This event created a stretch of land that the large mammals of the Ice Age era, along with the natives of that era, could very well have migrated across the newly formed land bridge, which now connected two continents. This land bridge is known as the Bering Strait, or Beringia. During the time that Beringia existed, the Wisconsin glaciers most likely prohibited migration to any southern or eastern regions. Another theory suggests that the early natives may have inhabited the now Alaskan region because it was ice-free due to low precipitation. Several melts over a period of time created passageways, and evidence from archeological site implies that there was an ice-free corridor for thousands of years. It was during another melt approximately ten thousand years ago, that a second corridor was most likely formed farther east along the borders of Saskatchewan and Canada plains. This points to the possibility that the ancient people could have traveled eastward along the rivers in the Great Plains, and down further south. The Indians known to history as the Sioux are also known as Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota, meaning allies. This is my heritage. I am a member of the largest division of Siouan family, otherwise known as Sioux. The name is from a term given to the largest and well- known of the tribal groups. At one time, my people stretched from the west banks of the Mississippi northward from Arkansas and the Rocky Mountains. The Dakotas also inhabited territory east of the river up to Wisconsin and Missouri. They were here to encounter DeSoto on his journey in 1541, when he reached the Indian villages in what is now eastern Arkansas. Another hundred years passed before any mention of Sioux existing, when in 1658 some Jesuit missionaries heard of the existence of about thirty Dakota villages just north of a Potawatomi mission. This was located at about the head of Green Bay, Wisconsin, in St. Michael. It was during the middle 1600ââ¬â¢s when the Sioux, along with the Arapaho and Cheyenne had to migrate further westward towards the Great Plains to what is known as North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. This migration was mainly due to the O jibwa and Chippewa tribes pushing them out of the Great Lakes region. The Ojibwa and Chippewa had been pushed out of their own land that had been further east, by the European settlers of that time. In 1805 Lewis and Clark passed through the center of this region and made contact with the Sioux tribes. After this took place, several more expeditions brought traders that settled among the tribes, and in the course of some time, permanent settlers arrived. This made the area so small that eventually the people of my tribe were forced to live in Indian Territories or confined to Nebraska, the Dakotas, or Montana. This brought on a series of raids and counter raids that lasted from roughly 1850 through 1890 and were known as the Sioux Wars. In the first years of the twentieth century, the Dakotas also known as Tetons began the process of adapting to their new way of life. They still had strong faith in their own traditions, but realized that the old way was gone forever. Numerous changes with the economy and politics were forced on my people by the government. The people strived to establish a life for themselves that used both new changes, but still remained true to their values and beliefs. During the rest of the twentieth century, all of the reservations for the Dakotas, Lakotas, and Tetons lost more land due to ownership passes and inheritances. Division between rural dwellers and people who live in town have grown bigger. Rural residents tend to retain their use of native language, and be involved in cultural events, when townspeople adapt other aspects of the American culture. Most of the Sioux nation and other groups of American Indians live in South Dakota, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and North Dakota at present time on privatized land created by the government many years ago. Analysis of Iron and Silk by Mark Salzman Essay -- Iron and Silk China
Analysis of Iron and Silk by Mark Salzman This book was given to me by a good friend who knew that I had an interest in Asia. I chose to read it because it was a true story and was told that it was a good read. à à à à à The author travels to China as an English teacher for the Hunan Medical School. There he stayed for two years picking up many anecdotes along the way. The author already had spent a large amount of his life studying Chinese language and the martial arts. However, when he arrives in China he meets teachers who have dedicated their entire lives to perfecting a particular art or skill, whether it be martial arts or calligraphy. à à à à à Mark Salzman was perfecting his calligraphy skills and as weeks had passed he began to make progress. He was getting tired of the models and wanted to try something new. When he told Hai Bin,(his teacher), he frowned and said,â⬠Some people spend their entire lives researching a single model. You should be willing to spend a year on this one.â⬠This is an example of the dedication and perseverance these men have towards their chosen artform or skill. Another example of this theme, was Markââ¬â¢s Wushu teacher, Pan, who punched a fifty pound plate of steel up to ten thousand times a day. Markââ¬â¢s relentless practicing of the many forms of Wushu was influenced by Pan. à à à à à Salzman also showed that there was great oppression. The people of China were under constant surveillance and control. Rarely were they able to make important decisions f...

Procter & Gamble: From Top to Bottom – A Consultant’s View
Not only does P&G demand an outside the box thinking model, but they also demand collaboration inside and outside the Company. This is in addition to strict project management guidelines and the desire to be in communication with consumers, retail customers and outside stakeholders. (Leadership Development, 2014) Recommendation 1 ââ¬â One recommendation here is to involve employees on a greater level. The mission statement itself covers everything an employee should take to heart. However, involvement at the local level may increase the publics awareness to the firm's existence.Employees being more involved in going to local retailers and attempting to market P's products, giving away products to local homeless shelters and charities, providing charity work in the local communities by P&G employees can take a company to another level in this area. P&G is heavily concerned with improving the lives of others around the world. It is this author's opinion that integrating a greater h ands-on approach an help accomplish this. P holds a lot of strength in its organizational structure. P feels the organization's structure is an important part of its continued growth. With products touching the lives of nearly 2 billion people every day, it combines its strength of product benefits and a local focus to win consumers and retail customers in all the countries where the products are embedded. There are four major portions of the organization, all embedded neatly in the company's Selling & Market Operations sector. These include ââ¬â Beauty, Hair and personal Care Baby, Feminine and Family Care Fabric and Home Care Health and Grooming (Corporate Structure, 2014) Specifically, the division of that delivers products to market is the Selling and Market Operations division. The division name was changed from Market Development Organizations because of the intense pride it takes in bring its products to the people of the world. The name change was not just a name change, i t clarified the work the firm does and the work they do best. This division handles every portion of marketability including superior, effective and efficient selling, distribution, shelving, pricing execution and rescheduling ââ¬â every day, every week ââ¬â in every store and in all its markets.Markets include Asia; Europe; India, the Middle East, and Africa (MIME); Latin America and North America. (Corporate Structure, 201 4) Recommendation 2 could likely benefit from a stronger focus in where it does not hold a strong enough market share. For example, in Personal Health Care, which is considered a $240 billion market, P is a market leader, but with only a 5% share. Another area is Beauty and Grooming, and while leads the consumer market, it only holds 13% of the share. (P ââ¬â 2014 Annual Report, 014) Organizational management is key to a business' growth opportunities. It has a number of billion-dollar and half-billion-dollar brands that cover a number of markets. P&G is certainly not lacking in performance. However, it is possible that it could build in certain areas. It has strong relationships with retailers, suppliers and a competitive advantage where innovation is recognized. Recommendation 3 ââ¬â It is possible that could reach its hands into undeserved and unseeded consumers. There are a number of markets where consumers are not reached such as those watching a lot of television. With Digital Video Recorders (DVD) available for every home in the world, it is possible that is not reaching these consumers because people typically fast-forward through commercials. If these consumers were targeted in other areas such as highway billboards, mobile app advertisements, and e-commerce, P&G may see a rise in its consumer markets. Employee performance management is not the only concept that creates an effective firm like Procter & Gamble. Another tightly held idea is their efficacy in the use of partners and suppliers. P&G's network of partners and suppliers is critical to our long-term success ND in our purpose inspired growth strategy to touch and improve more consumers' lives, in more parts of the world, more completely. â⬠(Partners and Suppliers, 2014) P&G's supplier diversity goes deep and is historical. Since the sass's, there has been a strong focus on its ability to diversify its supplier strategy. P&G holds a special pride with minority and women-owned businesses around the world, investing more than $2 billion in the last six years. This figure has placed P&G on a short list called the Billion Dollar Roundtable, which specifically invests more than a billion dollars a year with a minority or woman-owned business. Recommendation 4 A recommendation to be considered might be the insertion of deeper rooted supplier networks. Possibly delving into more privately owned businesses for their product sales. One of P&G's greatest weaknesses is its inherent ability to rely on ââ¬Å"big boxâ⬠retailers such as Wal l-Mart for revenue generation. With P product insertion into stores like Wall-Mart, the world-wide retailer is at an advantage with potentially greater bargaining power. With this comes less profit for Procter & Gamble. Spreading the market share to smaller entities could help level the playing field with these large retailers. Chuan, 2010) Investing in a number of partners, P has not only generated awards for its partnership strategies, it has also helped to better the lives of the people who work in these companies. With well-treated employees comes greater confidence in the products created.P has set a very important standard in its desire to be a trusted company. P's goal, where its products are concerned, is family safety. They need the consumers that purchase their products to come back and purchase more. The organization considers its commitment to safety as a part of its heritage and future. There are more Han 700 experts that work for P&G globally, specifically to ensure the safety of its products with respect to environmental safety, human safety and the various regulatory compliance agencies around the world. Product Safety, 2014) Recommendation 5 Where product quality is concerned, P&G is heavily involved. For example, in 2007, there were a number of product recalls in its pet food division. With keeping its powerful brand name, P&G eventually sold off its pet division. This is an example of a recommendation that was followed and came out on top. With fast moving product, which is what P&G relies on, having re-stocked rodents is important. Generating sales is heavily reliant on new and innovative products. There is a possibility of having greater product quality if third party assets assisted in quality management. With so much product oversight on the inside of P&G, this leaves room for bias. Outside experts, working independent of P&G, and not under financial collusion, could assist in bringing greater product value to the market. (Chuan, 2010) Con sidering the size and reach of P&G, their use of technology plays a significant role in its daily operations. They are reliant on IT systems for internet sites, data costing, processing facilities for tools and other hardware. The use of these IT systems includes services such as ordering and managing materials from suppliers; converting materials to finished products; shipping products to customers; marketing and selling products to consumers; collecting and storing customer, consumer, employee, investor and other stakeholder information and personal data; (P&G ââ¬â 2014 Annual Report, 2014) The firm has clearly stated A breach of information security, including a cyber-security breach or failure of one or more key information technology systems, networks, processes, associated sites or service providers could have a material adverse impact on our business or reputation. (P&G ââ¬â 2014 Annual Report, 2014) Recommendation 6 It is recommended that instead of relying heavily on its own employees for security management, to consider moving to a third party company and outsourcing its security.Ideally, with the extensive product development and its classified nature (until necessary patents are obtained), it is recommended that the firm receive the same level of security as the Department of Defense receives. Additionally, while the following details are likely classified, P&G's yester should be regularly hacked by white-hat hackers to determine potential security holes and assist in having them plugged. The culture at P is very strong. They lend the strength of their culture to its powerful innovation Structure. Is constantly displaying their formidable position on the planet as a leading innovator. A well-known process of moving the innovation from idea to prototype, to development, to qualification, to centralization is in place for the product launch model.Bob McDonald (2008) stated ââ¬Å"Innovation requires a certain kind of culture, one that is curio us ND courageous, connected and collaborative culture, and open-minded ââ¬â a culture in which people want to take risks to identify game changing, life enhancing innovations. â⬠McDonald went on to say that culture is not something that can fall under a mandate or be imposed. Good culture is grown on an organic level and while it cannot be demanded, it can be shaped and influenced. Recommendation 7 ââ¬â Change management exists in all companies around the world, big and small. Dealing with the change comes down to working with employees in the firm to ensure the smooth transition. With constant changes in laws and isolations around the global, a global organization like Procter & Gamble should consider a Change Consistency department, whereby change is predicted and the firm can then get ahead of it.Working with regulatory agencies around the world, it is possible that P can obtain potentially conflicted items based on ingredients. For example, in China, a number of pr oducts were found to have banned substances in them. Had there been a department designed to specifically combat these issues, P could come out on top and release products that do not interfere with a country regulatory efforts. With the above stated Change Management, there comes number of issues involving power, politics and conflict. With that in mind, everything comes down to quality leadership and effective communication. Without these two ingredients, it is too easy for a firm of this size to fall into complete disarray.

Unconditional Love
Unconditional Love With jolting word choice and the effective application of imagery, the poem My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltz, written in 1948 by Theodore Roethke (1908 ââ¬â 1963), presents the speaker as a child who is trapped in a world tragically affected by alcoholism and physical abuse yet who relentlessly attempts to attain love and affection from his drunken and violent father. The whimsical lyrics prompt the reader to recognize that although this poem depicts the essence of a child, the implication of a life of patterned torture is in deep contrast to the reality of a carefree childhood. My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltz is written in quatrain form purposely echoing the sing song sound of idyllic childhood rhymes to contrast the meaning of the poem which illustrates a childhood experience with an alcoholic and abusive father who, despite the ongoing pain inflicted, is still loved unconditionally by his son. The speaker relates this experience in his childhood with his drunken father in an almost affectionate tone, yet with the distain of the alcoholism and violence soundly ringing through. He states, ââ¬Å"The whiskey on your breath, Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death: Such waltzing was not easy,â⬠(lines 1-4). The speakerââ¬â¢s tone reveals that although his father drinks to the point of his breath being intoxicating and that the situation is confusing to the lad, he still ââ¬Å"hung on like death,â⬠grappling with his hope that if he continued ââ¬Å"the waltzâ⬠ââ¬â the relationship with his father ââ¬â that he would retain his fatherââ¬â¢s love. In the last line of the stanza, the speakerââ¬â¢s resolute determination of continuing with the difficult waltz lends credence to the optimism of his youth which is evident in his perseverance to experience the father-son relationship. The word choices throughout the poem, such as ââ¬Å"death,â⬠ââ¬Å"battered,â⬠ââ¬Å"scraped,â⬠and ââ¬Å"beatâ⬠imply that the speakerââ¬â¢s childhood is certainly not a functional one and, moreover, is filled daily with the cruel interactions of his hardened father. The speaker reflects, ââ¬Å"We romped until the pans, Slid from the kitchen shelf; My motherââ¬â¢s countenance, Could not unfrown itself,â⬠(5-8). This passage suggests through detailed imagery that although this young boy is being abused by his father, with household items being knocked from their places with the shaking of the violence, his mother shamefully remains a silent but disapproving bystander as she witnesses her childââ¬â¢s horrendous beatings. The brutal scene continues to unfold as ââ¬Å"The hand that held my wrist, Was battered on one knuckle; At every step you missed, My right ear scraped a buckle,â⬠(9 ââ¬â12). In a vivid display of terrifying progression, the father grasps the boyââ¬â¢s wrist with his hand in an attempt to land yet another steady blow, battering his knuckles even more. When his drunken state causes him to stagger, the boyââ¬â¢s ear scrapes against his belt buckle, instead. As the fatherââ¬â¢s tension and fury explodes from the failed strike, the speaker recounts that his father ââ¬Å"beats time on my headâ⬠¦ then waltzed me off to bed,â⬠creating a vision of a frenzied rage as he is repeatedly hit until he is thrown violently into his room at the end of the beating (13, 15). Throughout this instance of abuse it is quite clear that this childââ¬â¢s love for his father is steadfast and unwavering. Regardless of the incessant beating, the last line of the poem is the boyââ¬â¢s emphatic plea for love and acceptance as he was ââ¬Å"still clinging to (his) shirt,â⬠(16). While he notes his fatherââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"palm caked hard with dirt,â⬠the excusing tone suggests that he recognizes the hard life his father lives and thus pardons his cruelty. As is often the case with an abused person, no matter the depths of the abuse that is endured, a longing and a resilient hope for a functional, loving and nurturing relationship with oneââ¬â¢s parent continues, as is displayed in My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltz. Tess of the dUrbervilles Review
'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' Review Originally serialized in the newspaper The Graphic, Thomas Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles was first published as a book in 1891. This work was Hardys second-to-the-last novel, Jude the Obscure being his final one, and both are considered among the best works of the 19th century. Set in rural England, the novel tells the story of a poor girl, Tess Durbeyfield, who is sent by her parents to a supposedly noble family in the hope of finding a fortune and a gentleman for a husband. The young girl is instead seduced and meets her doom. Story Structure The novel is divided into seven sections, titled as phases. While it may seem usual to many readers, critics have discussed the significance of this term in relation to the progress of the plot and its moral implications. Various phases of the novel have been named according to various life phases of Hardys heroine: The Maiden, Maiden No More, and so on to the final phase, Fulfillment. Tess of the dUrberville is essentially a third-person narrative, but most of the events (all significant events, in fact) are seen through the eyes of Tess. The order of these events follows a simple chronological sequence, a quality that augments the ambiance of a simple rural life. Where we see Hardys real mastery is the difference in the language of people from the social classes (e.g. the Clares in contrast with the farm workers). Hardy also sometimes speaks directly to the readers to accentuating the effect of select events. Tess is helpless against and mostly submissive to, those around her. But, she suffers not only because of the seducer who destroys her but also because her beloved does not save her. Despite her suffering and weakness in the face of her suffering, she demonstrates long-suffering patience and endurance. Tess takes pleasure in toiling on the dairy farms, and she seems almost invincible to the trials of life. Given her enduring strength through all of her troubles, in some sense, the only appropriate ending was her death on the gallows. Her story became the ultimate tragedy. The Victorians In Tess of the dUrberville, Thomas Hardy targets the Victorian values of nobility right from the title of his novel. In contrast to the safe and innocent Tess Durbeyfield, Tess dUrbervilles is never at peace, even though she has been sent to become a dUrbervilles in the hopes of finding a fortune. The seeds of tragedy are sown when Tesss father, Jack, is told by a parson that he is the descendant of a family of knights. Hardy comments upon the hypocritical standards in masculine concepts of purity. Angel Clares forsakes his wife, Tess, in a classic instance of the rift between belief and practice. Given Angels religious background and his allegedly humanistic views, his indifference to Tess produces a striking contrast of character with Tess who persists in her love - against all odds. In Tess of the dUrbervilles, Thomas Hardy has directly satirized nature. In the third chapter of Phase the First, for example, he targets both nature and its exaltation by poets and philosophers: whence the poet whose philosophy is in these days deemed as profound and trustworthy... gets his authority for speaking of Natures holy plan. In the fifth chapter of the same phase, Hardy ironically comments on Natures role in guiding humans. Nature does not often say See! to her poor creature at a time when seeing could lead to happy doing; or reply Here to a bodys cry of Where? till the hide-and-seek has become an irksome, outworn game. Themes and Issues Tess of the dUrbervilles is rich in its involvement with several themes and issues, and there are many quotes from the book that synthesize these themes. Like most other Hardy novels, rural life is a prominent issue in the story. The hardships and drudgery of rustic lifestyle are explored fully through the travel and work experiences of Tess. Religious orthodoxy and social values are questioned in the novel. The issue of fate versus freedom of action is another important aspect of Tess of the dUrbervilles. While the main storyline may sound fatalistic, Hardy does not miss the opportunity to point out that the darkest of tragedies could be prevented by human action and consideration: Humanity.

Dog and Cat Names in German
Dog and Cat Names in German Hunde- und Katzennamen One of the questions that German teachers hear most frequently (besides why is a table masculine?) is: What are some popular German names for dogs/cats? But Germans dont always use German names for their pets, any more than they do for their children! Although there are German versions of names like Fido, Spot or Tabby, just as those English names are fairly uncommon for pets today, so are many typical German pet names. Dog names like Bello or Hasso are viewed as clichà ©s. Very few dogs in Germany answer to those names, or any German name, today. à «Der Zooà » (tsoh) is a zoo, but itsalso the German word for a pet store. If you dont believe me, look at this edited sample list of suggested dog names taken from a German Hundenamen Web site:à Aida, Ajax, Alice, Amy, Angel, Angie, Aron, Babe, Baby, Bandit, Barney, Beauty, Benny, Berry, Billy, Bingo, Blacky, Blue, Buffy, Butch, Calvin, Candy, Chaos, Charlie, Cheese, Chelsea, Cheyenne, Cindy, Cookie, Criss-Cross, Curlyà andà Curtis. And thats just taken from the A-C section! Yes, I left out some of the more Germanic names from the original list, but you can see the Germanic names in our ownà Haustiernamenà list. The point is that exotic English and other non-German names are popular with German pet owners. Even the detective hero of the bestselling German cat mystery novelà Felidaewas named Francis, not Franz. Most German name lists for pets contain about 90 percent non-German names. But you probably would prefer a German name for your dog or cat.à In our list you can choose a name that suits your tastes and your pet. You may wish to use the name of a famous literary or otherà German:à Kafka,à Goethe,à Freudà (orà Siggi/Sigmund) andà Nietzscheà are some possibilities. Prefer music? How aboutà Amadeusà orà Mozartà or evenà Beethoven? The names of German pop singers likeà Falcoà (who was Austrian),à Udo Lindenbergà orà Nenaà are also popular for pets. Or perhaps youd like the name of a figure out of German literature. Perhapsà Siegfriedà (m.) orà Kriemhildà (f.) from theà Nibelungenliedà or Goethesà Faustà versusà Mephistopholes. On the lighter side you could go withà Idefix, the dog in the popular European Asterix cartoon series, the rotundà Obelixà character or the heroà Asterixà himself. Then you may wish to have a good old Germanic name or word with a certain meaning:à Adalhardà (noble strong),à Baldurà (bold),à Blitzà (lightning, fast),à Gerfriedà (spear/peace),à Gerhardà (strong spear),à Hugoà (smart),à Heidià (based on fem. names containingà heidà orheide;à Adelheidà noble one),à Traude/Trauteà (dear, trusted) orà Reinhardà (decisive/strong) are just some options. Although few Germans today would be caught dead with such names, theyre still great pet names. Other categories for pet names include movie characters (Strolch, Tramp in The Lady and the Tramp); colors (Barbarossaà [red],à Lakritz[e] [licorice, black],à Silber [silver]; precipitationà Schneeflockeà [snowflake]); or drinks (Whisky,à Wodka).

The State of Accounting Convergence Among Large Public Companies Thesis Proposal
The State of Accounting Convergence Among Large Public Companies - Thesis Proposal Example ââ¬Å"The international standard-setting process began several decades ago as an effort by industrialized nations to create standards smaller nations unable to establish their own accounting standards. The regulators, investors, large companies and auditing firms began to realize the importance of having common standards in all areas of the financial reporting chainâ⬠(International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS): An AICPA Backgrounder n.d., p. 2). The union among the countries includes the European Nations (Larson & Street 2004) and China (Qu & Zhang n.d). Many of the large public sector companies all over the world have been against the adoption of the new standard for a number of reasons. Till today, the precise reasons for the opposition and objection for the new accounting standard convergence are not clearly understood. The main idea of the dissertation is a theoretical explanation of the weighted resistant factors. The above research questions need to be addressed through an investigation. The researcher will conduct research by means of literature review on accounting convergence. The literature will comprise of researches on the delay in accounting convergence. Hail, Leuz, and Wysocki (2009) identified transition costs as a major factor in the reluctance of U.S companies to move towards convergence. The literature will also include official explanations of what convergence is and why it is being implemented (AICPA, 2011 & 2010). No hypotheses are associated with the research question, as an exploratory Delphi method will be used to generate the factorized and weighted list. The Delphi method has been frequently used with experts in accounting and financial analysis, as a means of generating factorized lists of adopted reasons. (Alwert, Bornemann & Will 2009). The dissertation will be valuable for committees that are working towards promoting accounting convergence as
